Natural Vs Artificial E-Liquid Flavors

What Do "Artificial" and "Natural" Actually Mean When It Comes To E-Liquid Flavors?

We’ve all heard it: "electronic vaporizers just contain PG, VG, nicotine, and e-liquid flavors – so what is there to worry about?" All available evidence may tell us that vape products are likely to be vastly safer than cigarettes, but the big problem with claiming just four ingredients is that last one, "flavorings." This one word represents a multitude of different chemicals present in our e-liquid, both artificial and natural, and it also represents a general unknown when it comes to the health risks of vaping. Vapers have more than 8,000 different e-liquid flavors to choose from. Is there any difference between the risks associated with those using artificial flavors, rather than natural flavors? What are VOOST™ fortified e-liquid flavorings derived from?

First, we need to be clear about what qualifies as a natural flavor. The official definition according to the FDA reads: "The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional." The upshot of this definition is that flavors which are derived from plants or animals are classed as natural flavors, and ones which aren’t (that don’t meet the above definition) are artificial flavors.

Artificial e-liquid flavors are manufactured using synthetic chemical compounds. To replicate natural flavor scientist’s use nature as their base model to first determine the natural chemical compound that occurs. From there they use synthetic and sometimes natural chemicals to replicate the flavor compound synthetically. The process was developed essentially to save time and money. Replicating natural chemical compounds can be costly, time consuming and sometimes unfeasible due to limited access to essential natural chemicals.

Synthetic Diacetyl, is a buttery flavor often used in microwave popcorn, has been linked to severe and irreversible obstructive lung disease when inhaled.

In 2014, researchers tested 159 samples of sweet-flavored e-cigarette liquids and found that over two-thirds contained diacetyl, 2,3-pentanedione, and carcinogenic aldehydes. [1] Among, the samples containing diacetyl, half of them contained concentrations of the chemical that exceeded safety limits for workplace exposure. A quarter of the samples containing diacetyl had more than five times the level of the buttery flavoring that is recommended as safe in the workplace.  The workplace exposure limits are only regulatory guidelines, they do not mean it’s safe to inhale flavorings at this level daily.

As with food you ingest, just know what you are inhaling. Consumers typically frown upon artificial ingredients in foods, so why should we treat what we breathe and inhale any different?

Always look for "Made in USA" on the label.

The general consensus is that the higher quality e-liquids are being manufactured in the USA. Our Voost™ line of fortified e-liquids use only USDA certified organic flavorings and are the first e-liquids of its kind in the world.

Should I Vape Natural or Artificial Flavors?

The vaping industry is a relatively young industry. The e-cig was only first patented in 2003. While we wait for longer-term study results to arrive, it’s probably better to side with caution and stick to the purity of the fruits, plants, and extracts of Mother Nature. If you are committed to a future where humanity breathes wellness, rather than toxins, give VOOST™, the world’s first premium organically flavored, nutrient-rich e-liquid a try!
